Know What to Look For Before Hiring a Personal Injury Attorney

When you or a loved one has suffered an injury as a result of someone else’s carelessness, you should seek the advice of a personal injury attorney to ensure that you get the compensation to which you are entitled. Trying to handle your own claim will usually be fraught with frustration and if you make mistakes in how the claim is handled these may be difficult to fix later. In addition, remember that your lack of experience in handling these claims can put you at a distinct disadvantage when dealing with the trained bodily injury adjuster. That adjuster does not represent your interests, but represents the interest of the other party who caused the accident.

However, when seeking representation experience matters. So you should not hire an attorney based solely on advertising of their personal injury accident practice. You need to make sure the attorney has substantial experience in handling your type of case.  Is the attorney a Fla. Bar Board Certified Civil Trial Lawyer? This indicates he is a specialist in personal injury.  Is the attorney AV rated by Martindale- Hubbell? Martindale- Hubbell is a national attorney rating service. AV rating means the attorney has achieved the highest national rating for competency and ethics.  Why would you work with an attorney who has less than these credentials? When you select a Board Certified and AV rated attorney you are one step closer to choosing the right attorney for your case.

Find Out About How Your Case Will Be Handled

Find out if your case is going to be assigned to another member of the firm.  Is the attorney you are speaking to going to be personally involved in your case from beginning to end? Who else will be working on your case?  Will you be able to call the attorney and speak to him about your matter or will you only be speaking with his staff? You can tell immediately the attorney’s priority for personal service regarding your matter when you call the firm. Was your call answered by a friendly knowledgeable person or an automated phone system? Did you get to speak to someone who could help you and how long did you have to wait?

Cost and Services

Almost all personal injury attorneys have the same basic fee agreement.  We all work on cases on a contingency fee agreement in which we earn no fee if we do not recover for you.  Some differences exist regarding how we handle the expenses we will put into your case. These expenses we call costs. The costs are always collectable after the fee has been deducted in the event of a recovery. However, if there is no recovery does the contract say you owe the attorney nothing for the costs that were spent on your case?  If you recover on your case, is the attorney charging interest on the costs? These are the factors that differ from attorney to attorney.

Speak With The Attorney Before Making a Decision

You should feel positive after speaking to the attorney who will handle your case. Unlike attorneys who draft documents, such as wills or contracts, a personal injury attorney is representing you on a claim that you can lose.  Since a poor outcome can occur, just like surgery, it is important that you have a good feeling and confidence in the attorney who will be handling your case.

If you have contacted the law firm, had all your questions answered, their skills, knowledge, and attorneys meet the right criteria, and you are confident when speaking with an attorney, then you have found the right firm to take your case. Your attorney and staff will now work closely with you to find out how to win your personal injury case and get the compensation and justice that is rightfully yours.
